UPMSI, Bolinao Tour

T

The Alab-Tala Class of 2018 goes to
UPMSI, Bolinao

From the Headquarters of the Philippine Army, we go to Bolinao, Pangasinan to see the Giant clam in personal.

We ride a fisherman boat toward the location where the sanctuary of the giant clam located. It took us more than an hour to reach our destination. Despite the long travel, we do not seem to notice the time we travel towards the area. It was quite rainy that time but the water in there is still calm and only small waves are present.

Giant Clam (Tridacna Gigas)

During our tour in UP Marine Science Institute in Bolinao, we learn that they cultured Giant clam or Tridacna Gigas there. Giant clam (Tridacna Gigas) is the largest bivalve mollusks. It is the heaviest living mollusks. Its main diet is algae. In records, the world largest pearl; "Pearl of Allah" is said to be found in a giant clam.
As we arrive in the area where this giant clam located. When you look it at from above the sea, it look like a stone in the sea. A color black stone which is just a few meters from the bottom. When you look at the giant clam, it is like a giant mouth who will devour you whole. But luckily for us this clams diet are algae.

After swimming and looking at the giant clams, we went to see the fish cages there in Bolinao, Pangasinan. The fish cages are made of circular metal railings. And it uses plastic drums as floaters and underneath it is a large fish net.

There are around 40,000 milk fish in the fish cages. As what the tour guide said, they feed it with up to 3 sacks of fish feeds everyday. And the downside of this fish cages is that it is frown to destruction when there is a storm and the over population of fish in the cages which will causes the death of the fishes.

And also we observed that there's a lot of dead fishes floating along the railings of the cages. And in one corner there they collected  a number of dead fishes.

Personal Impression to the trip to UPMSI

Despite the long travel, rainy weather and short time of staying in the area I still enjoy our trip in the UPMSI. It is my first time to be there and my first time seeing giant clams in personal.

The UPMSI did a good job in cultivating preserving and protecting this giant clam. What they did is truly good in nature. And in return to what they done in preserving this giant clam in the area, the fishing industry their rises and it is also subject for tourism which is an additional livelihood to people in the area.

The Alab-Tala Class of 2018
Goes to Philippine Science Centrum

Philippine Science Centrum, its really great to be there. To be able to see the application of different concept in science that we know and how they work. To experience and enjoy things on how they work..

This is the finger tingler. Theres a knob there when you roll it down the people who are interconnected each other hand to hand will feel the electricity passing in their hands.

This is the Head on a platter.
As you can see in the picture, it look really the head was on a platter but actually it is just an illusion.

This picture is another one of the mind illusion in the Philippine Science Centrum. When you look at them you would see that they getting bigger. But the truth to this illusion is that the floor there is not equal. It is a slanted floor.

In this picture you can see the different kinds of insulators and their application and used in the real world.
